Schwing's new mixer truck features a hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system, emitting only water vapor while maintaining comparable load capacity (approx. 8-10 m³ of concrete) and range (400-500 km) to traditional diesel models. The company highlighted that this model is particularly suited for European regions with stringent environmental regulations, such as Germany, the Netherlands, and Nordic countries.
"Hydrogen is a vital pathway for decarbonizing heavy construction machinery," stated Schwing's Chief Technology Officer. "We aim to begin mass production by 2026 and have already established partnerships with multiple hydrogen suppliers."
EU's 2025 Regulations: Tighter Noise and Emission Standards
Meanwhile, the EU recently announced that, starting January 2025, it will enforce stricter noise limits (5-10 dB reduction) and emission standards (Euro VI-E compliant) for construction equipment, including concrete mixer trucks. The new rules are expected to drive the following industry shifts:
Faster Electrification: Manufacturers like Mercedes-Benz and Volvo have already introduced electric mixer truck chassis for urban short-haul operations.
Hybrid Technology Adoption: Conventional diesel mixer trucks may require battery-assisted systems to meet standards.

Companies like France's LafargeHolcim have pledged to cut fleet carbon emissions by 50% by 2030, with hydrogen and electric mixer trucks as preferred options.
Cost Barriers: Hydrogen-powered models are projected to be 30% more expensive than diesel trucks, though EU subsidies and green financing could offset costs.
