Hydrogen Technology Leads New Trend

As global carbon neutrality efforts accelerate, the concrete mixer truck industry is undergoing a profound transformation driven by green technology. At the recently concluded World Construction Equipment Summit, hydrogen fuel cell mixer trucks emerged as the most eye-catching innovation, signaling a disruptive shift for this traditionally high-emission sector.
Hydrogen Technology Breakthroughs Create New Opportunities
Swedish engineering giant Volvo Construction Equipment this week unveiled the world's first commercially viable hydrogen fuel cell mixer truck, boasting a range of 500 kilometers and a refueling time of just 15 minutes. CEO Martin Lundstedt stated, "This product will fundamentally change the carbon emissions landscape of the mixer truck industry. We have already received letters of intent worth €230 million from Germany, the Netherlands, and Japan."
Similarly, China's XCMG Group launched its independently developed hydrogen-electric hybrid mixer truck, featuring an innovative dual-power system combining hydrogen fuel cells with supercapacitors. The vehicle has successfully completed winter testing in Northeast China at -30°C and is scheduled for mass export to Russia and Nordic markets in 2024.
Policy Drivers Accelerate Industry Transition
The EU's newly passed Zero-Emission Construction Machinery Act mandates that all newly procured urban construction vehicles must be zero-emission starting in 2026. This policy has directly stimulated demand for electric and hydrogen-powered mixer trucks. German Environment Minister Steffi Lemke remarked, "We expect 90% of mixer trucks in Germany to be zero-emission by 2030."
In Asia, Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry announced that hydrogen-powered construction machinery will be a key focus of its Green Innovation Fund, offering up to 50% subsidies for R&D. Meanwhile, South Korea's Hyundai Construction Equipment plans to invest $300 million in a dedicated hydrogen construction machinery production base in Ulsan.
Traditional Manufacturers Face Transition Challenges
Amid this rapid technological shift, traditional diesel mixer truck manufacturers are confronting significant challenges. U.S. legacy company REXCON recently announced it would shutter its century-old diesel mixer truck production line and instead collaborate with Toyota to develop hydrogen models. CEO Michael Brown admitted, "This transition is happening much faster than we anticipated. The market is rapidly shifting toward new energy solutions."
Analysts warn that companies slow to adapt risk obsolescence. A new Morgan Stanley report predicts the global mixer truck market will reach $5.8 billion by 2025, with new energy models capturing 35% of the share.
Infrastructure Bottlenecks Remain a Hurdle
Despite promising prospects, the adoption of hydrogen mixer trucks faces challenges due to insufficient refueling infrastructure. Currently, there are only about 1,000 hydrogen stations worldwide, mostly concentrated in Japan, South Korea, and Europe. The International Energy Agency has urged governments to accelerate the construction of hydrogen refueling networks, particularly near major construction sites.
"This is not just a technological revolution but a complete restructuring of the industrial ecosystem," said Thomas Schmid, President of the World Construction Equipment Association. "The next five years will be critical in determining the industry's future landscape. Companies that adapt quickly will emerge as winners."
As carbon neutrality timelines advance in major economies, this green revolution-beginning with mixer trucks-is reshaping the trajectory of the entire construction machinery sector. Industry experts widely agree that 2024 will mark the first year of commercial-scale adoption for hydrogen-powered construction equipment.
