
Richard M. Wiesman '76, SM '76, PhD '83, a distinguished professor in the MIT Department of Mechanical Engineering (MechE), passed away on Sunday, January 7, at the age of 69.
Wiesman was a trailblazing technology innovator and leader, instrumental in bringing numerous intricate engineering systems to the marketplace. His work extended from initial laboratory development to successful field deployment. With a comprehensive skill set covering all facets of automation and robotics - encompassing design, control, communications, locomotion, actuation, sensing, and power - Wiesman provided a distinctive perspective that greatly enriched the education of MIT students. His impact was profound, making him an exceptional educator, mentor, and colleague.
John Hart, department head and professor of mechanical engineering, reflects on Wiesman's legacy: "Dr. Wiesman's immense passion for teaching, coupled with his illustrious career in industry, served as a tremendous source of inspiration for our students. His absence leaves a void that will be deeply felt. We will miss him very much."
Wiesman embarked on his groundbreaking work in the realm of mobile robots, initially focusing on the creation of a novel category of explosive ordnance disposal robots. This endeavor evolved into a thriving venture specializing in mobile robots designed for high-risk ground-based tasks. His contributions extended to the development of specialized robots tailored for internal pipe inspection, as well as robots dedicated to warehouse and packing operations. Furthermore, Wiesman delved into the analysis of team dynamics among robots, particularly relevant to planetary exploration scenarios. His innovative work not only addressed immediate challenges but also paved the way for advancements across diverse applications in the field of robotics.
Over a span of more than 40 years, Wiesman dedicated his career to Foster Miller/QinetiQ, beginning as an engineer and culminating in his role as the executive vice president and chief technology officer. His extensive industry experience also included serving as a senior fellow for General Atomics and as a valued member of Arsenal Capital's Industrial Growth Advisory Board. In 2021, he graciously shared insights into his rich career in mechanical engineering with students in the Department of Mechanical Engineering (MechE), leaving them with an encouraging sentiment: "I believe you've selected an absolutely wonderful career." Wiesman's profound impact on the industry and his passion for mentorship left an enduring legacy within the field of mechanical engineering.
